My college basketball career did not exactly workout the way I anticipated it to. There were countless of times where I became depressed about possibly never playing collegiate sports again. Well that did happen and I had to grow up and take my life into another direction. My father has been a basketball coach for my little brother’s Jelleff (league) team for about a year and he asked me if I could become his assistant and help him coach. The decision was pretty easy because I love being around kids, but these kids are totally different from your average kids (which I later found out). My brother and his teammates are some of the smartest kids I have ever been around. It seems like they would rather read books on a Saturday morning instead of focusing on winning games. My father has tried so hard to teach them how to play, but they just seem uninterested. I guess at that age its more about having fun with your friends than playing to win.

In the past two weeks, we’ve had two games and “Boy, Ol, Boy” do we need help! The first game we lost by 24 points. Last Saturday we lost by 32 points! Yes we are definitely getting better (sarcastic voice). We have at least three players that have potential, but we need the team to work and focus together. Just imagine how hard it is to tell “12″ nine year olds to be quiet and listen for an hour(haha).

Overall, I think we will get better as the season progresses. I will definitely try to teach them all I know, but their fundamentals are what we need to focus more on.  All we can do is keep working hard and improve our record from last year’s (1-7)! Stay tuned…..
